PLEASANTON — Hayden Rathbun was much like the Energizer Bunny Tuesday night. She just kept scoring and scoring and scoring for Uniontown High’s Eagles.

Rathbun ripped the nets for 32 points in leading the Eagles past Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs 60-47 in a first-round game of the 2012 Pleasanton High Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament. Rathbun hit one three-pointer along with way and was 9 of 12 from the free-throw line.

“We got off to a really good start. Hayden and Hope (Jurgensen) got us going early — Hayden just kept it going for the entire game,” said Ken Holt, Eagle head coach.

Jurgensen sank 8 of 10 free throws on her way to 10 points. She had six steals in the game.

Despite falling behind 19-6 in the first quarter, the Lady Cubs battled the Eagles the entire contest. They faced a 30-21 deficit at intermission.

Holt said Humboldt made runs at the Eagles late in the third quarter and again in the fourth. He said the Eagles took care of the ball and made free throws down the stretch.

“We were only down four with two minutes to go and were forced to play more aggressively, which put them on the line,” said Sherri Nelson, Humboldt head coach.

“They made all the free throws so although the score doesn’t reflect it, we were close to getting a win tonight.”

The victory puts Uniontown in tournament’s semifinals on Thursday. The Eagles (6-3) take on Central Heights High’s Lady Vikings, who beat Crest High’s Lady Lancers 67-21 Tuesday.

Humboldt (1-8) plays Crest (1-7) in Thursday’s consolation bracket.

Game times for Thursday’s action were not determined by press time.

On Saturday, the championship game is at 4 p.m. in the north gym at Pleasanton High. The third-place game is at 5:30 p.m. in the south gym, preceded by the fifth-place game at 2:30. The seventh-place game is at 1 p.m. in the north gym.

Humboldt shot 41 percent, 20 of 49, from the field to Uniontown’s 37 percent, 18 of 49. But the Eagles made up for that by cashing in on 22 of 34 free throw attempts while the Lady Cubs were 7 of 14 at the line.

Rathbun controlled nine of Uniontown’s 26 rebounds. Tayler Shook had six assists.

Freshman Breanna Kline paced the Lady Cubs with 14 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Sheri Middleton, a sophomore, tossed in 10 points, cleared five rebounds, made three steals and blocked two shots.
